Thousand Oaks at a glance

Thousand Oaks is the largest city in the Conejo Valley and, at about 55 square miles, the biggest in Ventura County by area. Around 127,000 people live here, and the city takes its name seriously: native oaks have been protected since 1970, and the city library estimates more than 50,000 oaks across the region. The Santa Monica Mountains rise to the south, and the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency looks after more than 12,700 acres and over 150 miles of trails around town, so a real hike is never far away.

The city's cultural center is the Civic Arts Plaza, which opened in 1994 on the site of the old Jungleland animal park and holds City Hall and the Bank of America Performing Arts Center. Its two stages host more than 400 performances a year, from touring Broadway to the New West Symphony. Amgen's U.S. headquarters and California Lutheran University are here too. Below you'll find this week's Thousand Oaks events, then the trails, museums, shopping and kid-friendly spots worth knowing, where to eat, and the annual events worth planning around.

Things to do in Thousand Oaks: FAQ

What is Thousand Oaks known for?

Its native oaks, which the city has protected since 1970, and its open space: the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency manages more than 12,700 acres and over 150 miles of trails. Thousand Oaks is also home to Amgen's U.S. headquarters, California Lutheran University and the Civic Arts Plaza, whose performing arts center hosts more than 400 shows a year.

What are some free things to do in Thousand Oaks?

Hike to Paradise Falls in Wildwood Regional Park or walk the Los Robles Trail. You can also visit Gardens of the World (call ahead for hours), wander the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden, see the current show at Cal Lutheran's Rolland Art Gallery, browse the Thursday farmers market at The Oaks, or bring a blanket to a summer Concert in the Park.

What is there to do with kids in Thousand Oaks?

The Kids' Adventure Garden at the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden opens Sundays from 11 to 3. Conejo Creek North Park has ponds and two playgrounds next to the main library, Sky Zone is good for burning energy indoors, and on weekends the Chumash Indian Museum pairs small galleries with trails in Oakbrook Regional Park.

What are the best hikes in Thousand Oaks?

Wildwood Regional Park is the top pick, with Paradise Falls, ridge trails and creek canyon across about 1,765 acres. The Los Robles Trail starts at the south end of Moorpark Road and follows a ridge with valley views. Oakbrook Regional Park, behind the Chumash Indian Museum, has trails through an oak canyon. Open space trails are open sunrise to sunset.

Where is Paradise Falls?

Paradise Falls is in Wildwood Regional Park on the west side of Thousand Oaks. Start at the main entrance at the west end of West Avenida de los Arboles and follow the trail to the waterfall and pool, as an out-and-back or a loop. It's free, trails are open sunrise to sunset, and leashed dogs are allowed. Check the open space agency's closures page after rain.

Where can you go in Thousand Oaks on a rainy day?

Try the Grant R. Brimhall Library, The Oaks and its dine-in AMC theater, or Sky Zone. A matinee at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center or Conejo Players works too. Skip the trails right after a storm: open space trails close in bad weather, and the Botanic Garden closes when its paths are wet.
