Santa Paula, CASanta Paula started as the Chumash villages of Mupu and Srswa, became part of the Rancho Santa Paula y Saticoy land grant in 1840, and was founded as a town in 1875, with Nathan Blanchard credited as its founder. It incorporated on April 22, 1902, and about 32,000 people live here today, according to the state's January 2026 estimate. The city still calls itself the Citrus Capital of the World.
It's an oil town too. Oil was discovered here in 1880, and Union Oil Company was formed in 1890. Its first headquarters, a Queen Anne building on Main Street, is Ventura County Landmark No. 36, though the California Oil Museum inside has been closed since 2021. Today the draws are downtown's murals, the free Agriculture Museum in an 1888 mill, the Santa Paula Art Museum in the 1924 Limoneira headquarters, and Santa Paula Airport, which opened in 1930 and opens its Chain of Hangars to visitors on the first Sunday of every month. Below you'll find this week's Santa Paula events, then the trails, museums, shopping and kid-friendly spots worth knowing, where to eat, and the annual events worth planning around.
