Westlake Village at a glance

Westlake Village sits on both sides of the Los Angeles and Ventura county line. In 1963 the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company bought the 12,000-acre ranch here for $32 million and, with Prudential, planned a "City in the country." Development began in 1966, and the lake at the center was finished in 1969. The county line cuts the community diagonally: the Los Angeles County side became the City of Westlake Village on December 11, 1981, and the Ventura County side was annexed into Thousand Oaks in 1968 and 1972.

The city itself had about 8,200 residents in the state's January 2026 estimate. Westlake Lake is private, with 125 acres of water and a little over 8 miles of shoreline, so boating and fishing are for residents, but the public can take it in from The Landing, the lake's commercial district on Lindero Canyon Road. Around it are open space trails like Wishbone and Los Robles, The Promenade and The Shoppes at Westlake Village, and a Sunday farmers market. Below you'll find this week's Westlake Village events, then the trails, arts, shopping and kid-friendly spots worth knowing, where to eat, and the annual events worth planning around.
