Oxnard at a glance

Oxnard is Ventura County's most populous city, with about 202,000 people, and it started as a factory town: a sugar beet plant built in 1898 gave the city its name when it incorporated in 1903. The Oxnard Plain around it is still the county's main strawberry growing area, and strawberries, worth $708 million in 2024, have been the county's top crop since 1999. On the coast, county-owned Channel Islands Harbor sits between Hollywood Beach to the north and Silver Strand to the south, and it is one of two harbors where Island Packers boats leave for Channel Islands National Park.

The harbor is changing. Fisherman's Wharf came down in August 2026 to make way for Karls Village, which is targeted to open in spring 2028, but the Sunday farmers market, the Maritime Museum and the kayak rentals are all still running. Downtown, Heritage Square preserves 15 pioneer-era buildings from 1876 to 1912. Below you'll find this week's Oxnard events, then beaches, museums, markets and kid spots, where to eat, and the annual events worth planning around.

Details checked Sep 14, 2026. Hours and prices change, so confirm with the venue before you go.

Things to do in Oxnard: FAQ

What is Oxnard known for?

Oxnard grew up around a sugar beet factory built in 1898 and became a city in 1903. Today it is known for the strawberry fields of the Oxnard Plain, Channel Islands Harbor and its boats to the national park, its beaches, and the Dallas Cowboys' summer training camp.

What are the best beaches in Oxnard?

Silver Strand, just south of the harbor entrance, is the beach for surfing and bodyboarding. Hollywood Beach, to the north, has about a mile of sand and summer lifeguards. 'olołkoy Beach Park adds a playground and picnic areas behind the dunes, and Kiddie Beach inside the harbor has calmer water for small kids.

What are some free things to do in Oxnard?

Parking is free at the harbor beaches, and 'olołkoy Beach Park is open daily from 7am to 7pm at no charge. You can walk the Heritage Square grounds any day, browse the Sunday harbor or Thursday downtown farmers markets, and watch the harbor's Parade of Lights, which turns 60 on December 12, 2026.

What is there to do with kids in Oxnard?

Try the pirate ship playground at 'olołkoy Beach Park, the calm water at Kiddie Beach, or the playground and docks at Peninsula Park. The Channel Islands Maritime Museum is free for anyone under 18. Each April the harbor's free Celebration of the Whales festival fills up with kids' activities.

How do you get to the Channel Islands from Oxnard?

The islands can only be reached by boat. Island Packers, the national park's boat operator, sails from Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard and from Ventura Harbor. Oxnard departures include Anacapa Island day trips and wildlife cruises. Boats don't go out every day, so reserve early. The park itself has no entrance fee.

Is the Strawberry Festival still in Oxnard?

No. The California Strawberry Festival moved from Oxnard's College Park to the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura in 2023, and the 2027 festival is May 15 and 16 there. The berries are still an Oxnard story: the Oxnard Plain is the county's main strawberry growing area, and strawberries have been the county's top crop since 1999.

What is there to do in Oxnard this weekend?

This week's Oxnard events are listed at the top of this page. A few things run every weekend: the Channel Islands Harbor Farmers Market on Sundays from 10 to 2, Heritage Square drop-in tours on Saturdays from 11 to 2, and the Maritime Museum, open Thursday through Monday from noon to 4.
