Moorpark at a glance

Moorpark is named for a fruit. In 1887 Robert W. Poindexter was granted title to the townsite and named it after the Moorpark apricot grown across the valley, then laid out the streets and planted pepper trees downtown. Trains reached the depot near High Street after the Santa Susana tunnel was finished in 1904. Moorpark incorporated in July 1983, covers about 12.4 square miles, and had about 34,200 residents in the state's January 2026 estimate. In 2005, crews working on the Meridian Hills site dug up a southern mammoth, the only one ever found along the California coast.

High Street is still the heart of town. The 1930 El Rancho theater is now the High Street Arts Center, and the street hosts Country Days in October, Haunted High Street on Halloween and the Apricot Festival in May. Moorpark College runs America's Teaching Zoo, a living classroom with more than 100 species, and just outside city limits Underwood Family Farms draws crowds to its farm market, animal center and fall harvest festival. Below you'll find this week's Moorpark events, then the trails, museums, shopping and kid-friendly spots worth knowing, where to eat, and the annual events worth planning around.
