For something smaller and quirkier: Cafe Nouveau in downtown Ventura

A 1920s Spanish bungalow with a cult following for its maple bacon beignets. Not a buffet, not a hotel — just a beloved neighborhood brunch with charm and great food. Order the beignets.

For Camarillo: Onyx Bistro

• Rent a Duffy boat at Ventura Harbor and cruise for an hour with a bottle of wine and a cheese board. There's nothing else like it in the county.
