Ventura County's coastline runs roughly 40 miles from the Santa Barbara County line to Point Mugu, with three distinct sections: the Ventura coast (downtown to Solimar), the Oxnard plain coast (Silver Strand to Hollywood Beach), and the Point Mugu/Naval Base area. Each beach has a different character — surf, sand quality, parking, dog rules, family-friendliness — that matters once you start spending time there.
This guide covers every Ventura County beach that locals actually use, organized by section. Best for surfers, best for families, best for dogs, and which ones are genuinely overlooked by visitors.
The Ventura coast section runs from Solimar Beach (north) through downtown Ventura and Pierpont to McGrath State Beach. This is the surf-culture stretch — C Street is one of the premier point breaks in California, and the entire coastline is woven into Ventura's identity.
Surf · downtown Ventura
The signature Ventura point break — long right-hand wave on a south or west swell, working consistently year-round. Fairgrounds parking lot serves as access. Crowded on a good day but a working-class wave by Southern California standards.
Surf, swim, walk · south of Ventura Pier
Wide flat sand beneath the Pierpont neighborhood grid. Walkable from downtown, popular with both surfers and beach walkers. Limited paid parking; many residents walk or bike from nearby blocks.
Family, walking, fishing · downtown
1,700-foot pier with end-of-pier views to the Channel Islands. The promenade runs the length of the beachfront with bike paths, picnic shelters, and a playground at Surfers Point. Daily surfers below; restaurants and shops up top.
Beginner surf · north of Ventura
Gentle long-board wave on a low tide and small swell. The local learning beach — surf schools and rentals operate here. Limited parking along PCH; arrive early on weekends.
Camping, hiking, family · between Ventura and Oxnard
State beach with full campground (174 sites), Santa Clara River estuary, and a 2-mile stretch of mostly empty sand. Less crowded than coastal Ventura or Oxnard beaches; popular with birders and overnight campers.
Quiet, surf · north of Ventura toward Carpinteria
Narrow access strip along PCH with a small beach community. Limited parking; quieter than C Street. Real-feel local beach without the visitor crowds.
The Oxnard plain coast runs from Channel Islands Harbor (north) through Hollywood Beach and Silver Strand to the Naval Base boundary. Wider beaches, gentler surf, and the only harbor-with-private-docks residential market in the county.

Wide flat beach beneath the Hollywood Beach neighborhood. Gentler surf than Pierpont — better for swimming and beginners. Boardwalk runs the length; metered street parking close-in.
Family, dog-friendly, surf · between Hollywood Beach and the harbor
Narrower beach south of Hollywood Beach — quieter, fewer visitors, slightly better for dog walking (off-leash hours specific). The local-secret stretch of Oxnard's coast.
Family, picnic, playground · central Oxnard
62-acre city park with grass, palms, and dune-side beach access. Picnic shelters, playground, dog-friendly stretches. The default Sunday-afternoon spot for inland families visiting the coast.
Family, food, walking · harbor district
60-acre harbor with sailboat charters, paddleboard rentals, weekend farmers' market, and Maritime Museum. Walkable harbor district; popular for weekend family outings without going all the way to the beach.
Quiet, walking · Mandalay Bay residential
Behind the Mandalay Bay residential area. Less visited than Hollywood Beach; quieter weekday mornings. Limited public access (most beach access is via Mandalay Bay HOA entry).
Family, fishing, gentle surf · Port Hueneme city beach
City-operated beach with fishing pier, picnic shelters, and one of the more accessible coastal facilities in the county. Free parking and a wide flat beach. Popular with naval base personnel and Port Hueneme residents.
South of Naval Base Ventura County's Point Mugu installation, the coastline transitions to Mugu Rock and the Pacific Coast Highway corridor through Sycamore Cove and Leo Carrillo State Beach (LA County). This stretch is the dramatic, less-developed end of the Ventura County coast.

Sandy cove with picnic tables, restrooms, and protected swimming on calm days. Day-use fee parking. Less crowded than Malibu beaches just south.

Mugu Rock is one of California's iconic coastal photographs — sea stack at the curve where PCH bends inland to Oxnard. The narrow beach below is accessible at low tide; popular pull-off for photos and walks.

C Street (California Street / Surfer's Point) in Ventura is the signature break — long right-hand point break, working year-round on south/west swells. Mondos for beginners. Pierpont and Hollywood Beach for variety. Each works best on different conditions; serious surfers check Surfline before deciding.
Oxnard Beach Park (62-acre park with playground, grass areas, and beach access), Hueneme Beach (gentle surf, fishing pier, free parking), Hollywood Beach (wide flat sand, gentler surf than Pierpont), and McGrath State Beach (camping, river estuary, less crowded). Each has different parking and amenity setups.
Rules vary by beach. Silver Strand has off-leash hours; Oxnard Beach Park has dog-friendly stretches; Hollywood Beach allows leashed dogs in specific zones. Most state beaches (McGrath, Point Mugu State Park) have leash requirements. Check signage and the city/state agency website for current rules before bringing your dog.
Silver Strand (south of Hollywood Beach), Solimar Beach (north of Ventura), McGrath State Beach (between Ventura and Oxnard), and Sycamore Cove (Point Mugu State Park) are consistently less crowded than C Street, Hollywood Beach, or Oxnard Beach Park. Weekday mornings everywhere are dramatically quieter than weekends.
Yes, at McGrath State Beach (174 campsites with full facilities) and Point Mugu State Park (Sycamore Canyon and Thornhill Broome campgrounds). Both require reservations through ReserveCalifornia, and weekends book out months in advance during summer.
Channel Islands Harbor (Oxnard) is the primary commercial harbor with marina slips, sailboat charters, and water access. Ventura Harbor is smaller. For private dock-attached residential, Mandalay Bay and Seabridge in Oxnard are the only residential markets in the county where you can keep a boat behind your house.
Generally yes, though water quality varies by beach and conditions. Heal the Bay publishes a Beach Report Card grading water quality at most California beaches; most Ventura County beaches earn A grades in dry weather. Quality drops temporarily after rain events (urban runoff). Avoid swimming for 72 hours after significant rainfall.
By 11am most popular beaches (Hollywood Beach, Hueneme Beach, Pierpont) are noticeably full; by 1pm parking is challenging at the close-in beaches. Locals arrive early (7-9am) for parking and morning surf. McGrath, Solimar, and Sycamore Cove stay manageable longer.
