The backside of Conejo Mountain is covered with volcanic deposits that are 12-25 million years old. Geologically speaking, this is barely enough time for seeds to be carried in by birds and the wind, let alone sprout into wildflowers.
We'll start at a tiny neighborhood trailhead near Newbury Park High School (shhh! Don't disturb the neighbors!), then walk north past an ancient bulldozer used to fight the occasional mountainside fire, then climb up to the northwestern side of the hills and back to the lava-covered landscape. We will continue until we reach the Powerline trail, where the ambitious among us can continue up to the very top of the mountain. I'll be turning around, though, as **six miles and 1,000' of climb** will be plenty for me.
Gigantic volcanic boulders festoon [our route](https://www.gaiagps.com/map/?loc=14.0/-118.9774/34.1819&pubLink=tf6a1cebbClOI8kLr13PMGwP&routeId=21dbcdf9-2d8b-4afe-8878-9751088b6460). Enjoy!
**Trailhead Directions:** Exit 101 at Wendy Drive, and drive west on Old Conejo Road (which parallels 101 on its south side). At Reino Road, turn left, and drive south. At Lesser Drive, turn right. At Calle Alta Vista, turn left, and look for the little kiosk at the street. Park nearby, and **QUIETLY walk through the access to the open field behind the houses**.
